Match Report

Saturday 5th December 2009

Fourth XI
Mark Edwards
1 - 3
Royston

By Chee-Yong Lee

This was our chance to get our first victory of the season after last week playing away to this same team of Royston. We added a few players to our squad for this match to try and help ensure the victory. So with the more experienced team playing for us here was the line-up:

GK: James St John;
Back four: Mark Edwards (RB), Michael Seymour (LB), Steve Blanchard and Mark Friend (CB);
Midfield: Chee-Yong Lee (RM), Aaron Kenton (LM) Tom Smart and Sam Small (CM);
Strikers: Chris Landy and Danny Evans

Subs: Marvin Sinclair and Steve Viner

We started off this match knowing that we should win this match. It started off quite brightly for the Guild but they didn’t get the chances at the beginning and it was really just long shots, mainly two good long shots by Aaron Kenton, but then Royston was getting more into the game as well. After we had applied a lot of pressure, we were caught out on a counter attack, with the Royston’s RM getting in a cross for their striker to flick it home off his head. Still pressure was being applied by us and most were from corners and we had 3 in as many minutes and for two of them it was the same result of flying over everybody to the back post but at the time we got the third corner we learnt our lesson and Mark Edwards was at the back post to head home the equaliser.

So half-time came and a big decision was made to take Chee-Yong Lee off for Marvin Sinclair. This meant Marvin went LB and Michael Seymour went to RM. So the Fourths were still applying pressure still same as the 1st half with their chances coming through corners and mainly from the left hand side in the 2nd half as there was more pace and width down the left and none on the right for the 2nd half which meant Royston’s LB was very comfortable in the 2nd half. So then Royston got their lead again as they broke the offside trap and their striker rounded the keeper and got an easy tap-in. Chances were falling for us and their strikers but a lot were just shots from long range. Royston again broke forward after winning the 2nd balls and they got their 3rd goal. In between our keeper James St John did make a very good save one-on-one with a Royston Player. Unfortunately for the Guild that is how it ended.

Very disappointing result as we definitely expected to win this match. FOBG Fourths still without a win this season!!!
