After a 10-0 drubbing the previous week, we were all looking for a better performance, and I'm pleased to say that's exactly what we got. However we started a bit slowly and found ourselves a goal down after about five minutes. But from then
on we battled well and tightened up in defence and midfield not really allowing our opponents many more chances and towards the end of the half we created a few of our own, with Dean Lawson going close after good work down the left wing from Stuart Bullard and Richard Cawker.
At half time we made a tactical switch with "Blobby" coming on for Kevin Farrell, who had battled well for 45 minutes, but we felt that we needed our inspirational midfielder to spray the passes around in the second half.
Well we started well creating two or three good chances, before something quite astonishing happened. With a long ball played over our back four and with their forward at least 37 yards offside, we stood waiting for our Manager/Linesman to raise his flag, only to see he had decided at that crucial moment to light a cigarette, and only had eyes for his Woodbine and not for their forward, who of course easily scored, putting us 2-0 down.
After regaining our composure we set about our oponents and got our reward not five minutes later, after a good cross from Mick Haywood was met by Richard Cawker and the ball fell to me and I blasted home from 12 yards.
For the next 20 minutes it was all us, but we couldn't find the equaliser we deserved. But as so often happens to teams at the wrong end of the table, we didn't have any luck and with the ball in our box, and half a dozen ricochets later we were 3-1 down.
A quick break by the opposition and yet more poor luck and it was 4-1. Well we didn't let our heads drop and after good build up play, Dean Lawson sprung their offside trap and coolly slid the ball past their keeper. Even in the last five minutes
we could have still saved the game, but the woodwork and good goalkeeping kept us out. Well that was the final score but not too downhearted we went back to the dressing room, cursing our blind linesman.
A quick mention for Kevin Wolstencroft and the rest of the back four who battled well all the game and to Steve Pearce who kept goal for us and performed very well.
If any lessons are to be learnt from this game they must be to clear the danger area as quickly as possible as we got caught out fairly regularly, messing around with the ball in our box. Anyway, "top" of the league next week, so let's do what Charlton did to Blackburn, that is if we get a decent linesman!!
