Match Report
Saturday 11th December 1993
Sevenoaks Cup
2nd round
By Paul Tanton
As the First team travelled to Westerham, my thoughts were how could we keep the score down against a team whose results are printed in the Sunday papers. With our run of indifferent performances, this fixture didn't exactly fill me with enthusiasm. All this and several key players missing. Instead we produced one of our best performances of the season.
Steve Viner became the 24th player to play for the First team this season, he added extra youth to the First team! Anyway we got changed and put on our wet shirts washed and dried by Mark Young. We kicked off and soon got into our stride, closing down the Westerham team and putting their back four under pressure, we did not give them time to settle on the ball.
Westerham did take the lead but we quickly bounced back when Gary Napier ran on to a through ball and lobbed the keeper. At half-time it was 1-1 and we were playing really good football. We took the lead when Gary Napier with a great turn and cross for Prince to slot home. Westerham unfortunately quickly equalised. This rocked us slightly but we did continue to play good football.
With about ten minutes remaining Graham Donnelly hooked in a beastly cross and 'Ole Man Viner' came in at the back post and headed goalwards, the goalie missed the ball and caught Steve above the eye, I bundled the ball over the line - although Steve was credited with the goal. I am also claiming the goal because the ball hadn't crossed the line when I touched it and I'm writing the match report so there!
Westerham put us under pressure but we held out for a thoroughly deserved victory. We gloated in the Bar afterwards, bring on our next opponents (Otford).
Hon. Sec's PS: Steve Viner's "swelled head" is making a good recovery!
