The gloomy and uninspiring facilities at Middle Park Avenue, Old Brockleians Rugby Club was the venue for a game deservedly won by Crofton Albion A, who aided by new signings on the day, comfortably overcame the visitors by five goals to nil.
The scene for the whole afternoon''s performance began even before the game had started, when changing facilities for our team were not readily provided and an unfocused Farnborough team eventually made the pitch before kick off.
The overused bumpy pitch and flat football added to the ingredients for a game of little quality and unfortunately the little that was on show was provided by our hosts. The first half action was contained in or close to the centre circle, with intermittent clever use of the offside rule and interplay by Crofton''s nimble forward line.
It was following the breaking beyond our back line on two occasions that we were punished accordingly and thus we turned round at half time, two goals down and as yet to trouble our opponents goal.
The second period saw Farnborough play with more ambition, Chris Viner on his return to action, catching the eye and coming closest to opening our account for the afternoon. The game from the touchline was difficult to watch as Crofton added three more goals to their tally and a sense of relief was felt when the referee blew the full time whistle on a game that had almost ten minutes added due to matchballs being dispatched at regular intervals into neighbouring gardens, rivers, etc.
A flat performance, unrecognisable from the previous two matches and hopefully not to be repeated in the forthcoming fixtures.
