Match Report

This fixture was always going to be a very challenging test. The pitch was very big, very bobbly and the game was played in strong wind. Not ideal conditions. Junior Sports are realistically the only team that can stop us winning the title and both teams knew the importance of this fixture. Both teams did not play well throughout the game and seemed to cancel each other out. The referee seemed to halt play for every single infringement and this did not help the game to build up any tempo or rhythm.
We were poor in the 1st half, finding it difficult to keep the ball down and pass it. When we managed it, we represented a very potent force but it didn’t happen often enough. However the 2nd half was an improvement. Gaining a victory today was a massive step towards our season’s objective and victory was founded upon an excellent defensive display. As mentioned we weren’t at our best, but there were not many opportunities for the opposition to score and the longer the game went the more resolute we became at the back. If we keep a clean sheet we will win games because there is no team in this division that can live with us when we attack.
Both teams had their share of chances throughout the game, they hit the post in the 1st half and so did Stevens for us. We passed the ball better in the 2nd half and we looked dangerous on several occasions pressing for the winner. Black passed the ball out to Keyworth on the left who cut into the box going past two defenders before drilling the ball home. 20 minutes to go at this stage and we had some more breakaway forays forward and as mentioned stood firm in defence. Burkett had little to do and Adams and Fullone always looked in control defensively.
There’s not a lot else to be said about this game, it wasn’t a classic as they say. Another 2 points on the board but make no mistake, these were a very important 2 points. Well played lads.
