Match Report

By Vince Wray
Once again the players did themselves proud with an assured performance against what turned out to be very physical opposition.
We led 3-0 at half-time and as the scoreline suggests, we dominated play in the 1st half. Holwood had no answer to the pace shown upfront by Hunt and Wray and our passing was quick and accurate. Holwood did not threaten our goal at all. Wray opened our account after 5 minutes. Stevens released Bossley down the left flank whose cross found Wray unmarked in the box finishing confidently with his right foot. Just a few minutes later Wray exchanged passes with Adams whose pass sent Wray free into Holwood’s right hand side of the box, he unleashed a shot from the angle and found the top left hand corner of the net, a blistering finish. Holwood had no answer to our constant pressure at this stage and it was no surprise when the ever dangerous Hunt latched onto a clever pass from Stevens and poked the ball past the helpless keeper.
Holwood raised their game in the 2nd half, Bossley left the field injured, as did Skrine, and Hunt was substituted, as was Barnett. Myatt, Holmes, Black and Thrussell replaced. The Farnborough boys became a bit complacent and failing to properly clear our lines at a corner saw Holwood pull one back. Holwood’s tails were up and they produced a much better 2nd half display, but once again the defence stood firm with the skipper, Fullone, setting a brilliant example to his fellow defenders. This boy is unflappable and looks like he’s got so much time on the ball, he never panics and he’s getting better with every game. Once again Burkett had little to do in goal and Holwood’s threat amounted to very little. We still had our chances at the other end, but efforts from Holmes, Stevens and Wray were fruitless.
In the face of the pressure Holwood exerted, Farnborough took it and dealt with it. A measure of the team’s progress is that a year or so ago we may well have finished up drawing a game like this or even losing. Things have changed now and the boys are at last, learning to hold on to leads in the face of concerted pressure and see a game through to a winning conclusion.
Well played lads !
