Match Report
Sunday 10th December 2006
By Vince Wray
This was a fixture played in a difficult swirling wind which probably helped level things up a bit for the opposition.
Farnborough were always on top in this game but made hard work of their superiority telling. They had to battle hard to overcome the opposition and the conditions which they did so eventually. Our squad was tested to the full with Keyworth, Wray and Thrussell all unavailable and Bossley having left the club for Valley Valiants.
Ricky Stevens dispossessed one of their defenders on the edge of the box and shot past the keeper to give us a 1-0 lead after 15 minutes. A header from Myatt, on for the injured Holmes and playing his best game for the club so far, hit the bar and another header from Skrine went just over but Farnborough couldn’t add to their total before half-time.
Farnborough maintained their domination in the 2nd half but still found it difficult to get the 2nd goal. They were largely untroubled at the back and still tried to pass the ball at every opportunity. Stevens was struggling with a knock and Laurent was having a frustrating time up front but it was he who grabbed the all important 2nd goal in the dying minutes, finishing a mazy run which took him past a couple of defenders after being fed through by Holmes.
Another two points which sent us to the top of the table, still unbeaten. South Bank were no match for us and the draw against them in October certainly looks like an important point dropped. However, we can''t complain, the first half of the season is over and we’re top of the heap, let’s hope we’re still there in April.
Tandridge Cup quarter final next Sunday, away to Croydon Athletic, themselves unbeaten as well. Should be interesting, there’s nothing that Farnborough have to fear, they can beat anyone on their day. Let’s hope it’s our day next Sunday.
