Match Report

The lads were left to rue missed opportunities in this game where the opposition should have been put out of sight in the 1st half and were allowed to come back in the 2nd. Again, although we cruised to 3-1 half time lead, we seemed complacent and casual in our approach. During the first period we had more openings and half chances to make the scoreline at least 5-1. As mentioned South Bank rallied in the 2nd half and levelled things up 2 minutes before time, a disappointing conclusion to say the least.

We got off to a perfect start, after 2 minutes Ricky Stevens went through on goal and finished with his usual reliability. Chances followed but were spurned until Wray made it 2-0 with a left footed strike form inside the South Bank box. South Bank hit back with a well taken goal from about 25 yards leaving Burkett with no chance in the Farnborough goal. The defending was poor on this one with no players going to the ball and closing the opposition down, however the strike itself had to be admired. Again, opportunities were wasted until Stevens popped up with another goal, unleashing a fierce left footed drive from the edge of the box. 3-1 at half time, but it could have been more!

South Bank put on a better show in the 2nd half and scored with just 5 minutes of the 2nd half gone. A corner from the right was headed in by the same boy who scored their first, totally out-jumping our defence. Farnborough still had chances to score, Fullone had a header saved and Holmes’ shot was blocked after a skilful run from Laurent had set him up.

Stevens left the field injured and South Bank gained the upper hand in the closing stages, however we looked to have weathered the storm. 2 minutes to go, the ball doesn’t get cleared in our box, comes off a couple heads into the path of their striker who slips it past Burkett into the net. Disaster!

We missed chances to score but do we have to score four or five to make a game safe? It was clear that there are things to be worked on and improved, but on another day the Farnborough lads could easily have finished comfortable winners.
