Match Report
Sunday 1st October 2006
By Paul Tanton
Our 3rd league game and our 3rd straight defeat. After a good pre-season this is not the start to a season I would have liked.
The main reason for the poor start is lack of available players which made us play players out of position and we didn''t have enough alternatives on the bench. We had a total of 6 players missing, hopefully this will change in October and I''m sure results will improve.
The first half was possibly the worst half of football I can remember from the Sunday side in the last two years as we couldn''t pass the ball 5 yards and were constantly playing ourselves into trouble. Time and again Jumbo and some last ditch defending saved us. Eltham''s goal came just before half-time from a long punt downfield and a mix-up between Jumbo and Neil Connelly leaving their lively forward an unmissable chance. It was extremely frustrating to watch.
The second half was greatly improved (it couldn''t get any worse); we passed the ball much better and we ground out a couple of decent chances. We might have snatched an equaliser but in the end it was not to be.
Jumbo was Man of the Match which is amazing as he was wasted the night before.
We need everyone to stop getting on the ref''s case. I know it''s frustrating but I''ve played football long enough to know he''s not going to change his mind even if he''s having a total shocker. Also and more importantly as Sam said afterwards we must be more positive, show more togetherness and encourage more. Our greatest strength over the last couple of years has been our team spirit and we must get this back. We need everyone sticking together, working for each other and most of all we need everyone available.
No game this week but there is training every Wednesday.
