Sunday XI
Adam Dawson
1 - 0
Lessa Albion

By Paul Tanton

At last a win.

After an extremely disappointing and frustrating start to the season the management duo had their first selection problems of the season. Up until this game the team virtually picked itself due a lack of availability. The welcome return of Nana and Barry from injury and suspension gave us much needed attacking options which we haven''t had up to this game. It also meant that we could make changes during the game with 3 quality subs.

Traditionally games against Lessa end in hard fought draws. However this game was different as Adam Dawson scored a well taken winning goal from Barry''s flick-on, midway through the second half. The goal was straight out of the Brazilian school of football: a long hoof down the field, a good flick-on and then a calm finish. Wimbledon or Sheffield United used to score hundreds of goals like in the early 90''s. Not quite the beautiful game but who cares. Although it was only 1 nil we worked really hard and that’s why we won.

Our defence was well organised, marked tightly and made some crunching tackles and challenges. Judgie and Daragh covered every blade of grass in the centre of the park, Sam and Nana looked a threat out wide when we got them the ball (I think we need to get the ball wider more often) and Barry and Adam have a real understanding upfront which was clearly evident by the scoring of the winning goal. Neil Connelly got man of the match but about another 6 players also got votes which is the sign of a decent performance. My man of the match vote would have gone to Matti Wright but he forgot to buy me new golf shoes while on honeymoon in America so I voted for someone else.

We must continue this type of performance this week, also at home, against Milldean. If we do and with improved availability I reckon will get another 3 points. I''m hoping for another ''Big October''!

Thanks again to Dan Head and Sam Small for roping off the pitch.
