Match Report

To put it into perspective how long it’s been since we last graced the hallow turf of ‘Farrow Fields’ the following incidents have occurred. We have seen a rapid rise in the inclusion of horsemeat in burgers, the Pope has quit his post at the Vatican and we have potentially witnessed the biggest crime of the year to date and I’m not referring to a certain South African Olympian who has been accused of shooting his girlfriend, no I am of course referring to the theft of a certain John Deere mower! Today’s opposition were ‘Inter Vyagra’ however ‘Inter City’ would have been a more appropriate name as news travelled back to the clubhouse that at least 5 of their players were still on route via the 10:37 service to Orpington from London Bridge however when the opposition finally arrived Farnborough lined up as follows:

The home team started the brightest and allowed the ball to do the work on the well-looked after big pitch and after knocking on the door of the Vyagra goal several times they took the lead from a Neil Connelly corner out on the left hand side that was met by a towering header by Jim St John, 1-0 OBG’s. Farnborough should have then doubled their lead a few minutes later as Ben Clunn went in on goal and one on one with the keeper but his placed effort hit the upright and Simon Davies was not alert enough to follow up the rebound which allowed the last defender to get a block in at the last minute. Half time rang for what was not the most eventful of halves, 1-0 OBG’s!

Barry Grainger eventually doubled Farnborough’s lead after a succession of wasted chances (most notably Ben Clunn somehow shooting into the side netting with the goal at his mercy after the keeper had pulled off a very good stop low down). Barry beat the last man and struck a sweet shot that nestled into the corner and beat the goalkeeper\'s despairing dive, 2-0 OBG’s.

Two nil soon became three nil as Paul Tanton on as a first half substitute scored his first goal since September 2012, Paul making the most of a lapse in concentration at the back and shooting first time to put further daylight between the two teams, 3-0 OBG’s.

Farnborough continued to waste further chances but then scored a 4th goal as Simon Davies somehow stole the ball off the keeper after his first touch looked to have let him down and get him put on the sex offenders\' register to boot, 4-0 OBG’s.

Simon Davies doubled his tally for the match with a well taken goal as he went round the goalkeeper to score into an empty net and just as the clean sheet looked like it was on the cards for the home team Rosslee had a rush of blood to the head as he charged from his goal and brought down the Vyagra forward to concede a penalty. The penalty was duly converted to give the visitors a consolation goal, 5-1 OBG’s.

Full time sounded and Farnborough remained unbeaten this year and unbeaten at home for the season. There were so many chances wasted today, poor final balls and some good saves by the Vyagra keeper that if I was as to list them all this match report would look like War and Peace!
