If we rewound the clock to a whole year ago we comprehensively beat Cudham, however against the same opposition we were simply not at the races in one of the most one-sided matches we have been involved in.
Again Farnborough were hit by numerous absentees and therefore with the 12 players we were able to assemble we lined up as follows.
Gary Rosslee, GK
Danny Saines, LB
Paul Brett, CB
Andy Cobham, CB
Richard Davies, RB
Matt Wright, LM
Neil Connelly, CM
James St John, CM
Paul Bailey, RM
Paul Tanton, CF
Pete Harvey. CF
Sub,
Simon Davies.
Cudham are one of those teams that you know what to expect every time you play them; strong, physical, well organised and they possess several very technically gifted players they also have a very very good centre forward.
Farnborough from the kick off failed to take control of the match as they opted for long balls up to the front men but they were dealt with by the Cudham defence with ease.
For all of their pressing and clever attacking play Cudham did not manage an effort on target in the first opening 25 minutes, this was courtesy of some excellent defending from both Paul Brett and Andy Cobham. This was until a mix-up in the defence with their interpretation of the offside trap; a grateful Cudham forward found himself through on goal and as the home team watched in vain as the linesman failed to flag he coolly finished, 0-1 Cudham.
Cudham then added a second, this time the ball was headed down on the edge of the Farnborough box by Andy Cobham and as the ball fell sweetly to the onrushing Cudham player his first time effort had far too much pace on it for Rosslee as the ball sailed over him and hit the back of the net, 0-2 Cudham, then thankfully Andy Gable blew for half-time.
The second half brought a few changes as Farnborough opted for 3 at the back, with Paul Bailey joining Paul Brett and Andy Cobham sweeping, this tactic seemed to work momentarily as Cudham resorted to long balls but the 3 man rearguard did well to deal with the pressure. Cue a further breakdown in concentration as a quick corner found one of the Cudham midfielders in the penalty area where he had all the time in the world to pick his spot and curl an exquisite shot into the far left hand top corner, 0-3 Cudham.
The same player then scored another ‘worldie’ as he took one touch 20 yards out and let fly with another unstoppable effort this time into the top right hand corner leaving Farnborough totally deflated, 0-4 Cudham. The visitors had chances to add further embarrassment to Farnborough but Rosslee was on hand to make 3 vital saves and the lively Cudham centre forward even managed to balloon an effort over the bar from 6 yards out with the goal at his mercy!
Again the ref put Farnborough out of their misery as he blew for full time as Cudham sent Farnborough to their second defeat of 2012, however the manner of today’s defeat was not a very good one, hence why the MOM award was a 6 way tie with 2 votes a piece. Andy Cobham, Danny Saines, Paul Brett, Paul Bailey, Matt Wright and Jumbo.
I guess it is only fitting that the defence all got MOM votes.
No game next week.
