Match Report

‘Had we come out of today’s game against the Met with some kind of luck then it would have been our opposition calling the police to report a robbery’!

We lined up with several key players missing today but were still able to have a solid starting XI and subs and Farnborough lined up as follows.

With the Met kicking off against the bright sunshine it didn’t them take too long to carve out their first chance of the game when a ball from the right wing evaded each and every Farnborough defender inside the penalty box and found one of their unmarked ‘boys in blue’ whose shot from 6 yards out seemed destined to nestle into the Farnborough net however Rosslee was at hand to save his team from going one down within the first few minutes with a fine smother type save.

The Met continued to press forward without reply from the OBG’s and Rosslee was called into action yet again, this time getting down low to his right hand side and Chris Greenhough was on hand to deal with the rebound to keep the scores at 0-0. Minutes later and maybe the Met felt they should have taken the lead this time from an unmarked header which saw Rosslee tip the ball over the bar to yet again to keep the scores level. Surely this barrage of assault wouldn’t continue, would it?

The best chance of the half which fell to the Met (yet again) came when their centre forward broke free to not only have his initial low drive saved by Rosslee down to his left but his rebounded effort was somehow turned around the post with the entire goal at his mercy! Still 0-0 but Farnborough were truly riding their luck and were thankful for Rosslee in the goal to keep their chances alive.

Rosslee was at hand yet again to spurn yet another Met attack this time closing down their attacker and drawing a save using his left leg when a goal looked like it was on the cards, with the Met starting show their frustration at not being able to find a way through an inspired Rosslee Farnborough went in at half time 0-0.

In the second half the busier keeper yet again was Rosslee who was at hand to thwart at least another 6 or 7 Met Police efforts, the pick of the lot were a blank save that to be fair he knew nothing about and a full diving stretch to turn the ball around the right hand post. Farnborough continued to ride their luck but the Met just never let up and bombed forward. Just when there seemed to be no way past Rosslee in the Farnborough goal today and he had earned his team an unthinkable draw alas he was finally beaten. The Met forward who had seen at least three previous efforts saved did enough to chip the ball over the onrushing Rosslee and although Gary got “something” on the shot the ball unfortunately had too much momentum and found its way into the goal to break the deadlock, in a match that was so one sided that if this had been a boxing match would have been stopped in the first round. 0-1 Met Police.

Farnborough just like the first half just didn’t carve out one single decent opportunity to test the Met keeper and were on the back foot when the Met doubled their lead with an excellent solo effort that was started and finished out on the right flank, Robin Lipscomb being easily beaten by his man who was able to cut inside and carry the ball to the edge of the box and strike a sweet shot into the top corner that not even ‘the unbeatable’ Rosslee could stop, 0-2 to the Met Police.

That second goal somehow rejuvenated the home team and gave Farnborough the kick up the you know what as they finally started to play football and for their efforts were able to grab a goal back. This came courtesy of their first shot of the match on target and it must have had the Met keeper in bits and pieces as he inexplicably fumbled a tame Pete Harvey shot and Adam Dawson was on hand to stab home form less than a foot out. 1-2 Farnborough and the game was on a knife-edge.

Unfortunately there was not enough time for Farnborough to grab a second goal as Pete Harvey’s free kick 20 yards out sailed the wrong side of the bar with the last kick of the game and the ref blew for full time. Another victory against the Met had eluded Farnborough but this could have easily been a cricket score had it not been for an inspired performance from Rosslee in the OBG's goal who not only scooped MOM for the second week running but had the privilege of cleaning the kit (let's hope the kit comes back as polished as his display today).

Next week see entertain Princes Park Vets who are an unknown entity to all of us, but let's just hope we can give their keeper as busy game as our #1 had today!!!
