Match Report

We suffered our first defeat of the season but it was a good test against an excellent side and it was in the Queen Mary's Cup which we've already won last season (well got given), so there was nothing to get too downhearted about. FC Hollington are top of the league above us and went in to the game on a rather impressive run of form winning their first 3 games 7-1, 8-3 and 6-1 and unfortunately for us we only had the bare 11!

We started up the slope and were camped in our box for the first half hour and before we knew it were 2-0 down and in all honesty that flattered us, only some excellent defending and goalkeeping kept us in it. After the 2nd goal went in though we woke up and began to fear Hollington a bit less, with some strong tackles going in and decent play on the break. Shortly before half time we nicked a goal, with Matt Godward heading in from close range, 2-1 at half time.

Unfortunately Luke Dunne had picked up an ankle knock in the first half and could barely walk, as we had no subs he moved up front just to get in the way a bit and win some headers for us, which he did well. We started the second half as we ended the first and quickly equalised through Ben Slade, a goal I missed as I was looking the other way but I think it was a 2 yard tap in! After that though we seemed to sit too deep and allowed FC Hollington to control the last half hour or so and despite some resolute defending, they scored a couple of late goals to win 4-2.

All in all it was a pretty decent performance, under difficult circumstances and against a very good team. Man of the match was Joe Head who cleaned up the votes on his debut. Joe was called in at the final hour from the academy team through his cousin Dan and was excellent throughout, starting at left back and finishing at centre half.
