The Buff Vets
0 - 4
Vets
Pete Harvey, Matt Wright, Chris Greenhough, Tony Booth

By Gary Rosslee

We were going in to today’s match against the Buff with our immaculate record against them (played 1, won 1) at stake and were surprisingly able to field a strong team despite the long list of absentees away on international duty AKA holiday.

Having spent the week wheeling and dealing in the transfer market we were able to round up some new faces who would go on to have solid cameos.

We lined up as follows.

GK - Gary Rosslee
RB - Darren Burkett
LB - Neil Connelly
CB - Tony Simpson
CB - Matt Wright
RM - Si Harvey
LM - Aaron Carpenter
CM - Rich Davies
CM - Daragh Nott
CF - Pete Harvey
CF - Paul Tanton

Substitutes

Chris Greenhough
Barry Oldfield
Corporal Gary
Tony Booth

To say the first half was a drab affair would be an understatement with neither goalkeeper tested, which was gratefully received by Rosslee who had a very late night attending a Muse concert at Wembley stadium the night before but apparently not as late a night as Richard Davies whom I have been informed only had 2 hours sleep the night before. He would have had more sleep but decided to get to Norman Park at 8:45 over two and a half hours prior to K/O. that’s dedication for you!

Farnborough had the majority of the possession in the first half but lacked the final ball or cutting edge and then thankfully the referee blew for half time with the game in the balance at 0-0.

The second half saw some decisive changes by the management which led to Tony "I’m rubbish in defence" Booth introduced to the game and eventually broke the deadlock with a cracking finish with the outside of his left boot, this goal coming 5 minutes after he had seen a previous effort saved by the Buff goalkeeper. 0-1 OBG’s

The opening goal then made the game a bit more open which led to Farnborough doubling their lead courtesy of a towering header from Matt Wright after Darren Burkett had whipped in an exquisite cross from the right wing. 0-2 OBG’s

2 nil suddenly became 3 nil after the ref allowed for play to continue when the ball appeared to hit Chris Greenhough’s hand back on the half way line, Chris ironically then finished off the flowing move by scoring himself to break The Buff's hearts further. 0-3 OBG’s

Peter Harvey was then on hand to net a fourth with a crisp left foot finish leaving the Buff goalkeeper no chance and a flattering 0-4 scoreline to Farnborough.

The game was generally played in good spirits and the only blot on the copybook would have been the injury to Aaron Carpenter, let's hope it is not too serious. Many thanks to those who came in and helped us out at short notice; there were some excellent all round performances from the likes of Darren Burkett, Barry Oldfield and Matt Wright and eventual MOM winner Daragh Nott.

Next week sees us make the trip to the Beaverwood Club to face Cudham who are likely to give us a harder game than we experienced today so keep an eye out for that match report as it is bound to be a bit more interesting than today’s!!

Man of the match: Daragh Nott
