Queen Mary Cup
2nd round
By Luke Hutchins
I'm sure its nothing to do with alcohol abuse but I'm struggling to recount the facts of the games at the weekends more and more these days, assists, general lead up to goals, I forget these details…it may have something to do with the cold weather and me being a tropical person I don’t know.
Anyway to the game, Queen Mary cup, away to Cray Valley Res who had turned us over in the league fixture also at their place 3-1, a score to settle.
The team was as you were really from last week's result against Metrogas, only Michael Graham coming in up top in place of Ben Slade who moved to right midfield and Colin Judge in for Gio Fullone at the heart of defence.
We started brightly, Russell Nethercot on the end of a cross low across the box from Ben Slade, 1-0 early doors - lovely. Cray very nearly equalised in fortunate fashion, Georgie's clearance hitting the forward on the knees, the ball looping over him but thankfully for us coming back off the post. Our second goal tho' was a real beauty, Michael Graham, back in the team finding the net from 25 yards looping the ball over the keeper who was caught a touch off his line. Brilliant. Michael Graham made it 3 just in time for half time, this time being played through from the back, the initial shot was saved well but he reacted well and placed it home into the empty net albeit from a very tight angle.
It's fair to say everyone was pleased at the break, the back four of Judge, Eales, Philby and Tapsfield had coped with everything with ease to be fair, the midfield dominated, Lott and Jarvis winning tackles all day and Slade was useful, scoring and assisting on the right; that said we had won 4-3 from 3 down the previous week so we had to keep our heads on and new the next goal would be crucial.
That goal came early in the second half, Ben Slade with a neat finish to effectively kill the game. Philby slotted home a 5th having moved to right midfield and all in all it was a great performance especially given we have them in the league in a fortnight.
Anyway, the quarter finals are next in the cup, Old Roan who we also owe something to having lost 3-1 on the opening day.
Man of the match: Kevin Lott and Michael Graham
