Match Report
Saturday 7th November 2009
By Chee-Yong Lee
For those who have been checking on the FOBG website or have noticed there wasn’t a report on the match last week against Latter Day Saints, this is because I was busy but I have now tried to rewind my memory to the match and come up with some of the highlights of the match, so it may be short, so we didn’t know the line-up until we was in the middle of our stretching and Des was late arriving and so Mark Edwards picked the line-up and it was:
GK: Mark Edwards;
Back four: Michael Seymour (RB), Colin Brazier (LB), Mark Friend and Steve Viner (CB);
Midfield: Chee-Yong Lee (RM), Tom Smart (LM) Marvin Sinclair and Jim Halford (CM);
Strikers: Chris Landy and Matt Gardiner (Gibbo) ©
Subs: Sandeep Gurung and Ashley Johns
That is how the start of the match lined up, and FOBG were on top for the first 5-10 minutes and with the possession we found an early goal with the return of Gibbo up front (played midfield in match before) with a neat finish, this early goal seemed it might open the floodgates for us. However it was quickly changed as Latter Day Saints got a quick equaliser to cancel out FOBG early lead as they used the pace they had up front over our CB. They kept on utilising the pace as much as possible and it was working for them as in a blink of an eye we were 2-1 down. We still had our head up but we were beginning to rue the missed chances by our players. They did go 3-1 up which followed with a 3 goal advantage by going 4-1 up. It did make a difference with Michael Seymour moving to CB, Mark Friend to RB, to add that pace but the strikers still had the edge over the CB.
With the 2nd half under way there was quite a few heads that have dropped for FOBG but we carried on, then we were struck by another Latter Day Saints goal for 5-1. From the kick-off Latter Day Saints fell asleep (including the linesman) as Tom Smart stayed onside to race onto the ball and get to the ball before the keeper and just knocked it over the keeper with composure, 5-2. However, this didn’t spell a comeback for FOBG unfortunately instead Latter Day Saints got another goal to make it 6-2. The manager brought on Ashley Johns and soon after Gibbo had to come off with a minor injury to risk a major injury so Sandeep Gurung came on.
After all this the match was still as it left off although there was some good chances for FOBG to score like the 1st half, the match was finished after another 2 goals went in but in between the 2 goals Mark Edwards made a great reflex save, almost point blank, as he turned it away for a corner. The match did finish with a loss against Latter Day Saints 8-2, although the result doesn’t tell the whole story as we did have as many chances but it was just unfortunate that it wasn’t our day and we couldn’t take our chances.
