Match Report

Saturday 31st October 2009

Fourth XI
0 - 1
Crockenhill Old Boys

By Chee-Yong Lee

So the question was could we get out of this sticky and losing run? Well it didn’t start well as we had 15 players on Wednesday on the team sheet but there was a late drop-out and three of our players were taken up to the 3rds as they were short on players. So Mark and Des had to make do with 12 players, one of these players was including a return for the long-term absentee, captain Matt Gardiner, his return position for this match was to slot into centre midfield, with the rest of the team looking like this:

GK: Mark Edwards;
Back four: Michael Seymour (RB), Sandeep Gurung (LB), Steve Blanchard and Mark Friend (CB);
Midfield: Lawrence Kamara (Lol) (RM), Ashley Johns (LM) Tom Smart and Matt Gardiner (capt) (CM);
Strikers: Chris Landy and Chee-Yong Lee

Sub: Marvin Sinclair

The match started with FOBG having 11 players but later Marvin Sinclair did turn up about 15 minutes into the match. So on with the match and Crockenhill Old Boys were creating half chances and the match was being played more in the FOBG half in the opening exchanges. Crockenhill Old Boys were starting to put pressure on FOBG and were winning the all important second balls. The pressure then turned into a goal for Crockenhill Old Boys with a ball round the back which was toe poked past Mark Edwards who got a hand to it but couldn’t keep it out.

FOBG replied well and started to get into the match a bit more. However the balls weren’t really going to feet.

This was quite a stop start match as the referee was just giving the decisions with few advantages and the referee was inconsistent for one instance in the match Matt handball that was given seemed less of a handball than the opposition's ‘handball’ from a Matt shot late into the second half.

After that goal most of the chances that came for Crockenhill Old Boys were free kicks which were mostly off target with one of them tipped over well by Mark Edwards. Mark Edwards had a very good game and his display and saves kept FOBG in the match, he made some great saves and he also managed to save with his feet after it seemed as though there was a certain goal when the opposition was one-on-one and tried to round Mark Edwards but then laid it back to his team mate but was saved well with his feet by Mark Edwards, also he made a great fingertip save.

There were chances for FOBG as well with Lol unable to get a touch at the back post from a good cross on the left, another chance was when Lol got the ball to Chee around 25 yards out and he took the shot which just whisked past the post but the better option for him was to play it to his left to Chris Landy as he was free. The last real chance for FOBG fell to Marvin Sinclair as he raced into the box with Chee playing the ball through but it was bobbling and he didn’t catch it cleanly and instead he shinned it and it was deflected for a corner. However our best chance was probably the most obvious, and I believe it was a chance that you would call a stonewall penalty for FOBG but it wasn’t given by the official. So the match finished with 1-0 to Crockenhill Old Boys.

FOBG can take positives from this match and might well have been a different result, but for certain circumstances that went against us.
