Queen Mary Cup
1st round
By Luke Hutchins
Back to cup action for Farnborough and another cup game brings another win. Vince and Darren were forced into a number of changes this week due to injuries and to be fair the players that came in did very well. Nick Eales and Ricky Simmons missing from the back, Luke Hutchins and Chris Charlton from the midfield and Michael Graham up top. So in come Kane Valdes, Richard Tapsfield and Lee Cross, Sam Evans and new signing Dominic Philby.
The Guild started brightly and looked very lively up top and it wasn’t long before we had the lead in somewhat fortunate fashion. Nethercot released through by Ben Slade hit the shot, the keeper parried and in off the defender who was backtracking. One nil and no more than we deserved. Soon it was two, this time Ben Slade finishing off a long clearing ball from Fullone with an emphatic finish into the far left corner.
Half time and all things well, we were popping it around nicely, everyone seemed to be keen to get on the ball and we were clearly the superior side both in terms of ability and fitness. There was a few by the half time in Old Town shirts who looked to be struggling.
Second half began though and we lost a poor goal in truth and from then on we struggled for 4 or so minutes before re-establishing our dominance with some nice touches and it was no surprise when we made it three through Max Richardson. I actually missed this goal which is pretty poor journalism I know and has probably cost me the number two berth down at the Telegraph with Martin Samuel, but I was hungry and Shirley does a mean cheese roll and a coffee. A man's got to eat. I did get back though just in time to see Old Town bury one, their centre forward volleying home a deep cross to the back stick.
All in all a good result, we march on in another cup and look forward to next week against Orpington where the good performances of the players who came in this week give Darren and Vince a selection headache.
Done well boys.
