Match Report

We have had a tough start to the season and with this match it looked as though it would continue to be a tough start as they seemed a good team and were part of the OPK team that we lost to 4-0 last week but split from the OPK team. This wasn’t going to be an easy game as we were down to a thin squad due to drop-outs. We went from 15 players to just about 11 players so no subs.

So for Des it was just a case of who was playing where and this is what it was:

GK: Mark Edwards;
Back four: Mark Friend (RB), Colin Brazier (LB), Todd Arnold and Steve Blanchard (capt.) (CB);
Midfield: Ben Jones (RM), Michael Seymour (LM) Steve Viner and Chris Landy (CM);
Strikers: Chee-Yong Lee and Danny Evans

We were rushing a little to get out onto the pitch as we were waiting for the kit and it did come in time and everyone changed and out on pitch just in time for a quick warm-up before kick off.

As the match started Bexley Borough Reserves started the much better side with much more of the possession and using the ball better than Farnborough and just no chances were coming for Farnborough.

There was then an attack down the right side by Bexley Borough Reserves and he put the ball in and it cleared Mark Edwards and unfortunately Mark Friend could not clear it just before it went into the back of the net.

Still Farnborough couldn’t get into the game and the strikers couldn’t get a foot on the ball. With Bexley Borough Reserves pushing for a 2nd they got it from a 35 yard shot that just beat Mark Edwards as it hit the bar and bounced over the line.

The good news is that the heads didn’t drop from Farnborough and we battled on and we were then starting to create chances with Danny Evans drifting out to the left side and then a chance for Ben Jones but unfortunately his shot from outside the area just went past the post after good work from Michael Seymour down the left.

So Farnborough went into half-time at 2-0 and definitely the game still up for grabs and it was good to see no heads dropped when we fell 2-0 down.

So we enter into the 2nd half with it starting as it left off from the 1st half as Farnborough were in the game and it wasn’t just Bexley Borough Reserves side taken all the possession although they were still passing better than Farnborough.

Farnborough were definitely working harder now and just felt the game was there to grab a goal and we started to work the keeper and a good one-two between Danny Evans and strike partner Chee-Yong Lee gave a chance for Danny Evans to get a shot in and he did unfortunately it was straight at the keeper.

The Bexley Borough Reserves keeper suddenly gifted a chance for Farnborough to score as he took the ball out of his area while still handling the ball and it was a chance from the free-kick from Danny Evans and he tried to bend it round the wall and post but it just went wide. However, the same mistake from their keeper gave a chance for Michael Seymour to score from the free-kick but he also missed the target as he bent it wide and over the bar.

Farnborough started to apply the pressure to get the goal which would make it 2-1 and from a corner there was a lot of tight marking and some holding and fortunately for Farnborough the referee spotted this as a penalty was given as Chee-Yong Lee was being held and his marker was all over him that he could barely move. So a chance from the spot and ironically Farnborough was discussing who would take a penalty if we were to have one and we did get one and it was Danny that volunteered in the changing rooms and he stepped up and easily slotted it into the bottom right hand corner with the keeper not moving.

So Farnborough were back in the match and we were pressing for the equaliser but then that left us a bit short at the back as Bexley Borough Reserves broke away behind the defence but he hit the post.

Then another chance quickly followed for Bexley Borough Reserves as their midfielder was left in loads of space about 25 yards out and he had a crack but it was expertly kept and pushed away by Mark Edwards.

Unfortunately for Farnborough that’s how it ended with a 2-1 loss but Farnborough can take positives from this game as everyone stuck in there and it was a close result in the end.
