Match Report

We arrived at the ground in good spirits after last week's 6-0 drubbing of Maidstone. Our confidence was sky high; everybody was keen to play a part in today’s fixture, and maybe for once be very proud to put on a Farnborough Vets shirt?? That was apart from Steve Watson who somehow managed to injure himself in the warm up! We are awaiting the full diagnosis from the club doctor to determine the extent of the problem, initial rumours flying around the treatment room are that it could be a touch of the “Maceys” or Maceyitus as it is more commonly known. This is a rare condition predominantly found in 39 year old male Liverpool fans which can leave the player incapacitated for absolutely any amount of time. And just from actually kicking a football, a very bizarre case indeed. Medical experts are baffled all around the globe!

The starting line up against Wellcome was as follows after Danny Saines & Tant showed experience beyond their Vets Management years to somehow rearrange the team and keep balance through line up!

The quite aptly named “Wellcome” Vets literally invited us in to play some excellent football from the off. They decided to give us far too much room and space which we gladly took advantage of and bearing in mind the game was played on the smaller top pitch…..again (we are still big pitch virgins this season) we really knocked the ball about well and cut Wellcome open like a tin of beans.

Rich Davies playing in an unfamiliar position at right back was at the thick of our early exchanges knocking some exquisite channel balls for our forwards to get on to and switching the play nicely. Daragh the Duracell Bunny again was in tireless form in the middle of the park. We knew if we kept this up it was going to be another good day at the office and possibly another master display of (Young) Vets football at its finest!

The first real notable incident of the game came when the Wellcome forward came bursting into the FOBG area after a neat one two on the edge of the box but was met by a fully committed diving tackle by the FOBG goalkeeper. The ball had been cleanly won however the momentum of the challenge caused the forward to spin in mid air and land in a heap. He would not feature in the game for another 30 minutes, luckily enough it wasn’t anything too serious.

We deservedly took the lead with a combination of our new found Sexy football and some quite bad defending. We exploited the Wellcome full backs yet again with some excellent wing play, a driven low cross by Matt Wright was finished off clinically by Daragh Nott almost on the goal line itself, so 1-0 Farnborough.

We then scored an almost carbon copy of the goal this time finished off by Pete Harvey 2-0.

We coped comfortably with everything Wellcome came at us with due to some solid defending form the Danny Saines who made some excellent interceptions in our box and Tony Simpson had a blinder alongside the ever solid Andy Cobham.

We then scored a 3rd before half time, this time the goal came from Paul Tanton with an excellent finish after a 4 or 5 pass move which was the goal of the game and started again from Rich Davies at rght back. That now makes Paul joint top scorer with 4 goals in 5 games, he is up there with Pete Harvey and last week's hero Adam AWOL Dawson!

We made a couple of changes in the second half Gary coming on for Simon Harvey who had a solid game and we saw the “wellcome” return of Paul Garrett.

We added a fourth via an own goal and could have added more, I distinctly remember a fine double save from the Wellcome keeper thwarting Pete Harvey. Tony Simpson was unlucky not to open his account as he struck a side foot volley sweetly from a corner only to see it go over the wrong side of the bar. Maybe the small voice from their centre forward in his pocket put him off at the point of impact with the ball?

We were all enjoying ourselves on the pitch and looked comfortable but as always we took our foot off of the gas and the sexy football we had played for 70 minutes now looked like it was in need of a case of Viagra!

We came under pressure for a spell of 10 minutes or so which led to Wellcome clawing back a consolation goal via Gary at right back, the ball taking a nasty deflection off of his chest and diverting the ball past the flat footed Farnborough keeper who had up to now had another solid game between the sticks ;)

Man of the match award went to Tony Simpson for a Franco Beresi type performance at centre half.

In the end we ran out comfortable winners 4-1 and it was another encouraging display from every member of the squad. In our last two games we have looked faster, fitter and hungrier than our opponents and let’s hope that continues against the Met Police on Sunday where hopefully we can play on the big pitch which should give us an opportunity to express ourselves even more.
