Youngsters Shine in Chipstead Mauling

The Guild travelled to local rivals Chipstead after showing good recent form and started with 5 players below the age of 18 with another on the bench. The Guild lined up in an attacking formation, with Eales, Abbott and Fullone on the bench.

It was a fine evening for football and Chipstead’s surface looked fantastic to match the excellent set up that they have.

However, the first scare came in the first minute when a well struck effort from Mitchinson flew past the Guild upright – a clear warning sign for the visitors.

Minutes later Piper was put clean through after excellent Guild interplay and Piper cleverly chipped the ball over the advancing Porter for the Guild's opener.

Minutes later the Guild doubled their lead when Perkins poked in from close range after confusion from a corner and within 10 minutes the lead was three goals when Cooke finished from close range.

By now the Guild were rampant with Perkins, Stevens, Piper and Cleaver B bossing the midfield with quick, crisp passing and plenty of movement.

A disgraceful tackle on Perkins ended his game but not before a fourth goal was added by Williams J who found the roof of the net after Pipers effort rebounded off the post.

Abbott replaced Perkins.

Chipstead had two good chances to reduce the arrears with close range headers that were put over the bar by the Chapman, which was the start of a disappointing night's work for the skipper.

A fourth goal was added by Cooke who found the corner of the net from the spot after Williams J was karate chopped in the area.

Four turned to five after thirty five minutes when Cooke finished from close range after muscling his way through the Chipstead backline, but not before Stevens crashed a swirling thirty yard effort against the bar, leaving Porter stranded.

The first half rout was complete when Thompson deservedly added a sixth after Porter mishandled a tame effort. It was Thompson’s first goal for the First Team which was timed nicely for his starting debut.

At the half time whistle, the job was pretty much done after an awesome opening 45 minutes. The second half was all a matter of keeping a clean sheet, the ball and our shape.

In short the second half was not as half as lively as the first and Chipstead came into it more and were unlucky not to get on the score sheet on a couple of occasions, but sound keeping from Hawkes and poor finishing kept the Guild goal intact.

Eales replaced Davis on 55 minutes and Fullone replaced Stevens on 65 minutes to resort back to 4-4-2.

On 70 minutes skipper Chapman got his marching orders with a straight red after repeatedly abusing the match official but not before receiving a yellow card for a shocking challenge.

Shortly after a seventh was added after excellent work and cross from Williams J on the right found the trusty right boot of Cooke J who completed his hat-trick from close range.

Further goals could have been added if Porter hadn’t made an excellent fingertip save from Fullone and Cleaver hadn’t swapped his boots for a pair of Quaver shaped banana skins when he missed from what is believed to be about 3.2 centimetres, clearing the ball from any danger in the process…

In the last 10 minutes, Chipstead desperately tried for a consolation and a bad night for them was ended by the final whistle.

This was an awesome first half display that completely dismantled Chipstead at a very early stage in the game. We made our system work and our passing and our movement completely bewildered the opposition.

There were many decent displays across the park; Stevens really showed what a good player he is in both directions, supporting the attack when needed, but also doing the dirty work when called upon; tackling and tracking back towards his own goal which is a fantastic attitude from a 16 year old (the ‘deodorant in the eye’ excuse for coming off was a bit gay though mate…). Piper also had his best game in a Farnborough shirt and also showed the kind of attitude and work rate which makes him one to watch out for in the future. He nicked the all important first goal as well and grew in confidence as the game went on. Williams J really ran them ragged with his running on and off the ball and also got his first goal of the season and will look to finish the season strongly.Thompson, on his debut was a constant thorn in Chipstead’s side and on another day could have easily got a hat-trick. Thompson’s running with the ball, wiry strength and enthusiasm are strong assets for this 17 year old.

However, Jon Cooke got the nod for man of the match as he netted his first hat-trick of the season. Jon’s quick feet and clever hold up play was always a menace to the Chipstead defence who could not handle his intelligence and strength.

On Monday we have Hawkhurst who we always have good competitive games with and must look to use our assets against them if we are to get all three points. Let's get the ball down and play and show the commitment of today and I am sure we can take all three points.
