Match Report
Sunday 4th January 2009
By Vince Wray
We couldn’t believe that the game actually went ahead. Only 5 games were played in the league programme and that included our one. The referee decided the conditions were playable so we all got on with it.
There were several new faces in the 15 man squad today and we put in a very decent performance on a very icy and treacherous surface. We actually played as a team today, we passed and worked hard for each other and defended stoutly when we needed to.
I think it would be fair to say that Prince of Wales probably shaded the 1st half, based on actual chances but possession was fairly equal over the whole game and we shaded the 2nd half. We looked solid at the back with Judge and Pragnell in control, Nick Hussein marshalled the midfield (his best game of the season so far) who worked tirelessly and we caused problems for their defence with our forward play.
We reached half time at 0-0 and took the 2nd half of the game by the scruff of the neck. It was all Farnborough, Mike Graham was causing problems down the right and our forwards looked more likely in the 2nd half. So it was against the run of play when POW took the lead through a deflected goal from just inside the box. At the other end Wray shot wide after a great run from Milner and the dangerous Wade failed to connect when well positioned. POW had visibly tired and we were coming on very strong now, Mikey got in another telling run down the right, crossed and Dan capped a great game by managing to slot home to give us a deserved equaliser. Jamie Walsham came on as sub in the last 10 minutes and had a chance to win it at the end but unfortunately took a bit too long to get his effort in and the chance went begging.
I think the conditions levelled things up today, on a normal surface I’m sure we could have taken all three points. It has to be said that POW themselves were a much improved team from the last time we played them also. If we continue like this we will have a decent 2nd half of the season. Supported by the new faces in the squad who are committed to the team and who are prepared to give everything to their team mates, it was a refreshing spectacle, the opposite of our last game against Vista before Christmas. There’s no doubt we have the potential to compete for the runners up spot in this division, at least, which in my mind is a genuine goal we can achieve.
Onwards and upwards lads! Well played.
