Match Report

It would be remiss of me if I didn’t write a report after an entertaining game for the fans. Many of the fans had come to see our 20 goal a season goal machine, and they were not disappointed as from the top pitch there was quite a good view of the main pitch and Dave Thompson had been deservedly promoted to the first team! However our fans had plenty to cheer about within 5 minutes as we went 2-0 up after excellent play from Ben Tomkins down the left, that led to a goal and an assist as Adam swept one in at the far post. We were cruising and Old Roan had only just woken up, however that was our undoing as the next 20 minutes there was an Old Roan onslaught, as first one goal went in, then a good stop at the forward's legs by Geof stopped two going in. Then a clearance off the line by Paul in a smooth and assured way stopped another and then 3 more went in, in quick succession and soon we found ourselves 4-2 down with 10 minutes left in the half, it woke the fans up at this end anyway! We steadied the ship for the final minutes of the half, even if it was listing slightly to the left!
There was still belief, and we have had an abundance of that all season, with good second half performances in every game. Adam created an opening and was bundled over in the box after 10 minutes and Jon Ware smashed it home even with the need to shovel extra soil into the crater that was the penalty spot. 4-3 and it was getting exciting. The back four was very solid and soaking up everything that Old Roan could throw at us with each one of the defenders doing their bit. Time and again Old Roan attacked wave after wave but the Farnborough defenders stood firm and cleared their lines both long balls and short balls to the midfield and attackers that gave us good possession and an advantage to attack. Piers running in with one such pass and receiving and collecting a quick one two with Jon for Piers to toe poke the equaliser home for 4-4.
After just about an hour Edd made some changes that included Michael Seymour coming on and with his first touch he scored by a quick sneaky run into the box making it 5-4. Minutes later Michael was again involved, this time with a massive loopy lob high up in the air which landed with snow on and slipped through the Old Roan keeper's arms just as Adam challenged and gambled on it happening, Adam then managing to contort his body round and loop it over the keeper's head from an impossible angle. 6-4 and Old Roan were run ragged by the end. An excellent game, played in good spirit by both teams, hard but fair, and the referee being calm and consistent throughout.
MOM? Well I got it with 7 votes! Thanks for restoring my faith in being able to play at this level, sorry about the other dozen performances! Some of you youngsters have never seen me play like that…….ever, but I used to do it all the time when I was your age!
How old do I feel now I’ve said that? Not as old as Steve or Colin – yet…
