Match Report

Charlton Athletic Deaf
3 - 1
Fourth XI
Josh Walsh

By Chee-Yong Lee

Our first league game of the season was a tricky encounter away to Charlton Deaf. It was going to be a tough game as we wouldn’t know what to expect from the team in many aspects.

So as we were all in the changing room the line-up was read out by manager Des:

GK: Mark Edwards;
Back four: Michael Seymour (RB), Colin Brazier (LB), Todd Arnold and Steve Blanchard (capt.) (CB);
Midfield: Ben Jones (RM), Chee-Yong Lee (LM) Tom Smart and Chris Landy (CM);
Strikers: Josh Walsh and Tony Maillerdet

Subs: Jack Howard

We were running a bit late so we took a good and quick warm-up with Mark Edwards taking the lead. So as the match started both teams were playing well, Charlton Deaf didn’t have many big players but they were still a very physical team. However chances were falling for Charlton Deaf rather than FOBG and it was Charlton Deaf who came closest to scoring when there was a shot from the right hand side on the edge of the box which bobbled its way onto the post and fortunately for FOBG there was one of our men to clear it.

At last though a chance fell our way and it was Josh who got the chance to open up his account for FOBG and it looked like he would when he calmly took the ball round the keeper, he could’ve finished it with his left foot but he dragged it back onto his right boot and took the shot but by that time there was a man on the line who managed to prevent the goal by catching the ball in between his legs on the line and then knock it clear. It wasn’t long though before Josh erased and made up for that miss with a good side-footed finish into the bottom corner of the net after very good closing down and pressuring on the right by Ben Jones. From here FOBG held on till half-time with the score at 1-0.

It looked good for FOBG as the second half started and there weren’t any chances in the opening 10 minutes for either side but then it seemed that FOBG players started to tire and switched off when a through ball down the middle cut through the defence and through one-on-one he put the ball in the back of the net to equalise for Charlton Deaf.
It was then followed quite quickly with a second goal for Charlton Deaf as they broke through the middle again and it was a race on because the striker was racing to the ball as Mark committed himself and came out, unfortunately the striker got there 1st and tapped it past Mark, who got a hand to it, and it was 2-1 even though Michael tried very hard to get back and clear it, and as a result he picked up a knock after being challenged on the line but he was good enough to continue.

Before FOBG knew it, it was 3-1 to Charlton Deaf as yet again the defence was undone by their lack of pace but more importantly the ball rolled underneath Todd’s foot and they were in and the ball was well finished by Charlton Deaf.

We did have a chance to get back into the game when Colin (LB) came out of nowhere unmarked 6 yards out after a good flick on by Chris from the throw-in it fell to Colin’s right foot, however he shot straight at the keeper.

Then the manager made a substitution taking me off for Jack Howard and it was a straight swap and the first action for Jack was a lunge for the ball at the corner flag.
It could have been 4-1 but Mark made a good save to keep it at 3-1 and in the end when the whistle blew that was how the match ended and the result ended.
